Singer/Songwriter and Producer Jenny Alien Releases Single “Heart Attack” with Artistic Music Video
New York-based singer-songwriter/producer Jenny Alien has followed her debut LP Scumbag Rock$tar up with her latest single, “Heart Attack,” and its accompanying music video. The track continues Alien’s legacy of seamless genre-bending, bridging the gap between hyperpop, electronic music, and commercial pop in the same vein as Charli XCX and Sophie Cates. “Heart Attack” purposefully elicits contradicting emotions for listeners. Lyrics longing for a toxic love are set to playful, high-energy synths and bass. Alien shares, “I want people to cathartically yell along to this relatable experience and just have a good time.”
The accompanying music video (directed and shot by Bryson Edward Howe) includes neon-lit scenes that range from Alien holding a bloodied heart to dancing around a castle. As her own producer and editor, the clear creative vision and DIY sensibilities shine through. It is as visually bright and mesmerizing as Alien’s music sounds.
Born and raised in Chicago, Jenny Alien has spent recent years honing her craft in London and making her mark in the local music scene. She’s known for her diligent work in the live show sector, which has been described in a Loose Lips review as, “very Ke$ha on ketamine.” Time spent in punk bands before her move to England helped to create a rock-influenced sound, which has been well-maintained despite a clear genre shift. “Heart Attack” plays around with hypnotic riffs that infuse a part of Alien’s past, offsetting the sweetness of the other instrumentation and alluding to the track’s darker subject matter. This is where her songwriting shines through best. Alien’s bold, provocative and deadpan lyrics provide an authentic backdrop to a sound of rebellion, chaos and youth culture.
Now back Stateside, Alien is ready to release her first track that is not entirely self-produced. “Heart Attack” was produced with the pop duo Bluto for an unmissable collaboration. She explains, “It was an interesting process writing this revenge, angsty-type love/pop song with others because it allowed me to step outside myself and write something really bashful and just fun.”
