Spirit Catcher – Superimposed EP

The Gruuv imprint returns late April with the ‘Superimposed’ EP from Spirit Catcher, featuring collaboration with Raxon and remixes from label-heads Audiojack, and Kindimmer.

Belgian duo Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet aka Spirit Catcher have been in the game for over a decade now delivering material for imprints such as Silver Network, 2020Vision, Petz Recordings, Systematic and Noir Music.

Spiritcatcher’s output on 2020Vision back in the mid noughties was a quintessential part of the new wave of electronic sounds that were taking over from the dominant Tribal House sound at the time. It was that sound that inspired Audiojack to start making their own music. 10 years on Spiritcatcher fire a demo over to Gruuv, and Audiojack tell us ‘‘on listening to Superimpose, we immediately felt all of the original charm and nostalgia of that early work. When we first played it out it was an instant hit on the dance floor, and because it sits so comfortably alongside lots of different styles of music, we’ve played it in almost every set for a year. We’re very pleased to finally be able to release it along with their collaboration with Raxon, Remember To Forget and remixes from ourselves and current taste makers Borrowed Identity and Kindimmer.’’

Title cut ‘Superimposed’ opens things up and sees Spirit Catcher deliver a typically smooth number fuelled by staccato synth hooks, sweeping atmospherics and funk-infused bass licks. Audiojack strip back the vibe to a more reduced state with their interpretation, offering a raw take on things with gritty drums and meandering bass hooks driving the composition. Ostgut Ton’s Borrowed Identity delivers a striking remix to follow led by organic beats, dreamy pad melodies and metallic stab sequences.

On the latter half of the release Spirit Catcher teams up with Dubai’s Raxon for ‘Remember To Forget’, which sees the pair deliver a contemporary slice of electronica with elongated bass drones, ethereal strings and modulating synth blips across its seven minute duration. Kindimmer’s ‘Memory Remix’ then rounds things off taking ‘Remember To Forget’ into brooding and minimalistic realms with murky atmospheres, stuttering bass and sparse low-slung percussion.

Spirit Catcher’s ‘Superimposed’ EP is out on Gruuv 27th April 2015.
