It is regular label artist In Fields who is next up on La Belle Records with a fantastic five track EP that features the likes of Vanessa Anne Redd, Brisa Roche and a remix from Front de Cadeaux.
In Fields is a poet who works with sound waves. After releasing his deep and magnificent Beginnings and On Time EPs on this very label—as well as other bits on Rawax and an album on Desire Records—the Londoner is now back with music that is as impactful as ever.
Things kick off with ‘Stay Safe’, a slow and swaggering soul piece with warm chords, tender vocals and pained organic plucks. It’s a truly sensuous opener. Keeping up the pressure, ‘Communicate’ is next to impress. With bird-like synth calls, warbling bass undulations and deep sonar pulses all eventually scooped up by elastic drums, it is a spacious yet absorbing affair.
‘Rough Bloom (feat. Vanessa Anne Redd)’ is a more direct deep-disco cut that builds and builds to a hip swinging peak. Finger clicks and brooding bass rub up with a zithering lead synth line and the whole thing surreptitiously sweeps you up and away. The final stunning piece is ‘This Time, Pts. I & II (feat. Brisa Roché)’, a track that swells with big and dramatic vocals then dissipates to a heavy hearted drum line and melancholic pianos. It’s adventurous, arcing music that cannot fail to hook you in.
Rounding out an excellent release is a remix from Front De Cadeaux, a Belgian-Italian production and DJ duo aligned with labels like Roccodisco. Their take on ‘Stay Safe’ is heavy and foreboding despite the slow tempo. The drums are resonant, vocals heartfelt and the overall effect is truly majestic.
For the third time now on La Belle, In Fields has served up a magical EP that fuses electronic music with true soul and proper songwriting.
