Subject 13 return with ‘Dripping Sauce” featuring Conscious Route
With fans numbering Laurent Garnier, Charlotte De Witte and Alan Fitzpatrick, Subject 13 is back on the bounce with his new release ‘Dripping Sauce’ on R&S Records.
UK musical pioneers Subject 13 has leaned into many genres over his 30-year career, from jazz-step and tough-edged drum & bass to the hip hop sounds of the latest single, produced in collaboration with London MC & poet, Conscious Route. Dropping it raw and real, spitting conscious lyrics over hard-hitting stark rhythms plugged into a minimal and bleepy futuristic soundscape, this is already starting to fire up dance floors.
Currently working on a new album for R&S Records, it’s great to see the UK rave and jazz-step drum n’ bass pioneer dropping science again.
‘Dripping Sauce’ by Subject 13 & Conscious Route is available on R&S Records from 2nd December 2022. Cat No: RS2211 – 3617052219433
Subject 13 is a world wide respected, genre blending, music producer and dance music pioneer better known as Hackney resident, David Stewart. Fans range from contemporary tastemakers such as BBC Radio 6’s Gilles Peterson, Fabio & Grooverider, LTJ Bukem and EBTG’s Ben Watt, and most importantly, music lovers around the world.
S13 first announced himself with the instant classic rave track “Eternity” quickly followed by “Promise” which made the UK charts. His development of the early rave sound saw him go on to be hugely creative in the early drum & bass scene signing “Oceans” to Fabio’s label Creative Source and “Faith” to LTJ Bukem’s label, Good Looking.
With his own imprint Vibez Recordings he went on to introduce artists such as Seba, Paradox, Alaska, Big Bud & Intense, showcasing exemplary talents at the cutting edge for over 20 years with a sound that’s stretched beyond the conventional.
S13 exclusively released his solo album “Disclosed Knowledge” with Sony Japan, which included the epic track “Phuture” and then as the Black Steele Project signed to Crammed/BMG. His rare and surprising commercial release “Angels” featured on various Kiss FM compilations, as well as numerous UK National TV advertising campaigns, and is as evergreen a decade later.
An enigmatic figure in UK electronic dance music who continues to DJ frequently in Europe, S13’s beats have been hugely influential despite being largely uncredited for his genre-blending productions.
“Let’s talk longevity and diversity. Subject 13 have it both in spades, kicking it from 1990 right through till the future. Over this period they may not have been incredibly prolific, but with these guys it’s all about quality. I’m not a big fan of Downtempo Breakbeats, but the AA side of “Quarter Of A Million”, “Highway 57” gets me every time, just quality elements, structure and composition. “Quarter Of A Million” itself has one of the most idiosyncratic, nasty break tones, but in a strangely jazzy laid back context. That’s what I love about Subject 13, juxtapositions, surprises, and pure pleasure in sound in every track I’ve ever heard of theirs.”
