Suntapes’ ‘Travel Motion’ Finds Beauty in Stillness

In an age of constant noise, Travel Motion by Suntapes offers a rare gift: space. Crafted by Belgian composer and multi-instrumentalist Tomas Johan Kristian Vanderplaetse, this eight-track journey merges lush ambient textures with neoclassical piano and global folk instrumentation. It feels timeless, unhurried—like the sonic equivalent of watching clouds shift through a mountaintop window.

From the opening notes of “Overland,” listeners are guided into an ecosystem of sound both cinematic and sacred. Vanderplaetse’s use of instruments like the tanpura, ruan, and harmonium isn’t decorative—it’s essential. Each sonic layer tells a story of travel, introspection, and emotional weather. By blending analogue synths with piano recorded on-site in remote corners of the world, Suntapes doesn’t just compose—he curates atmosphere.

Yet for all its global inspiration, Travel Motion feels deeply personal. The tracks released under Vanderplaetse’s classical identity provide moments of raw vulnerability that ground the album in human experience. Whether drifting through the shimmering melancholy of “Plaza” or into the dark hypnotism of closer “Cavern,” this is music that doesn’t demand attention—it gently earns it. Suntapes invites us not to escape the world, but to listen more deeply to it.
