Various Artists – Fresh Wax 001

Edinburgh-based dance imprint Fresh Take Records launches their vinyl series Fresh Wax with a five-track VA including tracks from Easy Peelers, THEOS & Berzingue, Mr. Sosa, Aymeric and Bernado Mota.

Established in 2019, over the past few years Fresh Take Records has built an impressive catalogue of releases that champion sounds ranging from groove-led, organic house to thumping club-ready electro and soaring, broken-beat rave anthems. Though the tones may shift – sometimes wildly – from one release to the next, the quality of their output never wavers, establishing Fresh Take as one of the most reliable underground dance labels in the UK.

Their first release of 2022 sees them launch their new vinyl series with Fresh Wax 001: a phenomenal collections of tracks, many of which come from artists who have been involved with the label since day one.

First up is Easy Peelers, an Irish DJ / Producer duo with a passion for house music and a keen interest in all electronic genres who draw specific influence from classic deep house and the new wave of European minimal. Their track For The Record is smooth deep house in the vein of seminal artists like Mood II Swing, with its swung hats and chugging bassline taking centre stage.

THEOS & Berzingue’s You’re The One I Want is another classic-sounding cut that sounds like it’s been plucked directly from the 90s heyday of deep house, it’s wandering bassline, glistening synth lines and warm snatches of vocal creating a beguiling atmosphere.

Previously releasing on labels like Like Night On Earth and Anjunadeep, Southampton’s Mr. Sosa switches up the vibe on Scarab, reaching back even further into the history of house for inspiration. Calling to mind the pioneering electro cuts of the 80s and artists like Joe Smooth and Larry Heard, Scarab is utterly breathtaking.

Aymeric’s Groove Elation is all about the interplay between his crisp, tight percussion, an infectious guitar loop and the evocative vocal sample which is one that gets lodged in your head – a masterclass in stripped-down simplicity.

Completing the package is Party Tonight from Portuguese artist and member of the DVRST collective, Bernado Mota. Dreamy, ethereal snatches of instrumentals and vocal samples are rooted by a thumping kick/bass combination which brings real weight to what is at heart an emotional and highly affecting house cut.
