LA-based producer VNSSA has teamed up with #23by23 to release the official remix pack for “In The Dark,” stemming from a recent contest partnered via Insomniac’s longstanding DJ/producer competition series Discovery Project and hosted by #23by23 and Native Instruments. The remix contest was aimed at encouraging female, trans, and non-binary producers to showcase their skills and win the opportunity to be featured on the remix EP released on the Discovery Project imprint..
VNSSA is an LA-based producer who has made a name for herself by bringing her off-kilter approach to making house, breaks, and techno. She previously showcased her idiosyncratic production prowess on Insomniac Records with her strutting tech house track “In The Dark,” which was featured on LP Giobbi’s inaugural ‘Femme House’ compilation, showcasing music from all-female identifying individuals including Mija, Coco & Breezy, Kaleena Zanders, Mary Droppinz, Mz Worthy, Marsha Mar and Leena Punks. Leading the charge was also the piano goddess herself, LP Giobbi, teaming up with frequent partner-in-crime HERMIXALOT on their soulful house offering “Togetherness.”
VNSSA is now pushing the mission forward, having hosted an official remix competition powered by Insomniac’s Discovery Project, resulting in an all-female remix EP including up-and-coming artists AIMMIA, ABCO and ZOF.
Fellow Angeleno, AIMMIA, secured the first place slot which rewarded her with the lead spot, a dark tech house offering that peppers the vocal hook over oscillating basslines, skidding synths, dark tonal embellishments, and shuffling drums.
ZOF shares her excitement, saying, “Remixing a VNSSA track was a dream come true, especially since it’s with an initiative like Femme House, which has been doing amazing things to empower women in the music industry!”
ABCO provides a breakdown on her rework: “This is a super fun track for the club so I wanted to keep the low-end dark and driving for the remix but add the old-school house elements that I love. I added some call and response piano elements and introduced the classic house organ in the breakdown that plays really nicely with the bassline when everything comes back in. Had a blast working on this remix and it’s all thanks to Femme House, 23×23 and Insomniac for making it happen and supporting female producers!”
#23by23, a campaign from Canadian DJ Sydney Blu created with the help of Native Instruments, aims to encourage labels to increase their percentage of female, trans, and non-binary producers to 23% or more by the end of 2023. By collaborating with VNSSA, #23by23 hopes to create more opportunities for underrepresented groups in electronic music.
Released last March, the ‘Femme House Vol. 1’ compilation was coupled with a nationwide tour of live shows and seminars/workshops to empower female-identifying individuals with the tools to navigate through the music industry. The overwhelming support and love surrounding the release is still being felt to this day, as VNSSA highlights three exciting female talents coming up in the house music space.
