Australian house maestro Wax Motif makes his highly anticipated return to Insomniac Records with his sophomore single, which sees him tapping Portugal’s rising-star Kura for collaboration duties on “Lo Que Soy,” a smokin’ summer slammer that’s delectably garnished with a sprinkle of salsa.
Situated right in the dizzying zenith of house music, Wax Motif has been staking out his turf in the international scene as one of its increasingly well-rounded players. Last year marked his debut appearance with Insomniac Records, connecting with BRIT-nominated, platinum-certified artist 220 KID from across the pond on their soulful offering “See In Color,” allowing him to showcase his deeper sensibilities. He’s now returning to the fold to demonstrate his ever-expanding dynamic once again as he recruits the talents of Portugal-based prodigy Kura on their Latin-driven tech house collab.
“Lo Que Soy” weaves a hip-shaking salsa groove around a framework that’s bursting with primetime appeal. Wax Motif and Kura envelop the classic whirling percussive complexities of the polyrhythmic nature of the genre with a weighty house energy that has its footwork focused on modern-day maneuvers. Opening with sauntering piano keys and sharp claps, the track follows the lead of its sultry yet commanding Spanish vocal hook. “Lo Que Soy” escalates into a beefy, bouncy groove that’s backed by sporadic horns, snarling stabs, robust plucks, and shuffling drum patterns, ensuring that it delivers the requisite main-room thrills, and then some.
Reflecting on how the collab came together, Kura shares: “Back in October, I was creating a bunch of small drafts and ideas to test during ADE, and I had a 1-minute version of a Latin groove that I decided to play during that week in Amsterdam. I’ve always been a fan of Wax’s productions and, funny enough, we ended up playing the same boat party. When I played that early draft, I saw that Wax was bouncing his head and thinking, ‘What the hell is this.” At the end of my set, we finally got the chance to meet, and we decided that we had to make something together. Wax was able to work this idea and take it to the next level, with both our styles combined. The result is the perfect combination.”
Already finding its way into the hands of tastemakers from the likes of John Summit, Dom Dolla, and Diplo, “Lo Que Soy” looks to be another crowd-approved smash for Wax Motif. With nearly 15 years of hefty house creations under his belt, last year he unveiled his most ambitious artistic statement to date with his debut artist album ‘House of Wax’ on his own Divided Souls imprint, giving him the creative licence to expand on his influences of R&B, disco, UK bass, and beyond. Later in the year, he dipped his toes in the Latin scene with his bombastic collab “La Candela Viva” alongside Insomniac imprint regular Matroda for HARD Recs, racking up more than 3.1 million streams and counting. Continuing his relentless work ethic, Wax Motif is set to announce his biggest National Tour with 22 stops including dates at Knockdown Center in New York City, Mission Ballroom in Denver, and Space in Miami, to name a few with many more to be announced.
On the other hand, Portugal’s Kura is a fresh face who’s already a certified heavy-hitter in the studio, throwing down all manner of massive house offerings like there’s no tomorrow. Spreading out across the full spectrum of house sounds spanning big room, progressive, tech house, and electro, he’s amassed millions of streams, in addition to earning two Beatport #1 hits with “Beast Mode” and “Calavera” with dance titan Hardwell.
“Lo Que Soy” is the epitome of a Latin house weapon, armed with the expertise from its masterminds Wax Motif and Kura.
