We Are Enfant Terrible – La femme au faux cils

As spontaneous and far-out as ever, the trio We are Enfant Terrible are back with a new single on PIL records that comes with remixes by You Man, David Shaw & The Beat, Juan Soto and Meki & Kolen.

We are Enfant Terrible is a guy-girl trio enamoured with electronic objects, weird fashions and edgy guitar riffs and was created at the end of 2008. Their first album was released in April 2011 on Last Gang, where Chromeo, Metric and Crystal Castles also release, and it afforded them plenty of globe-trotting touring taking them from Toronto to Shanghai. From punk squats to support slots for famous artists (Peaches, the Ting Tings, Vitalic), We are Enfant Terrible cemented their reputation both live and in the studio and now do so once more with this new heat.

In original form ‘La Femme aux Faux Cils’ is a jangling, rugged disco tune with spangly guitars shooting out chords in all directions. Freewheeling drums make for a lively groove, molten sci-fi electronics add a sense of futurism and softly delivered French vocals add a certain libidinousness. It’s a rollicking good-time tune that will have club floors and festival areas rocking, no doubt.

You Man – an electro band from Lille signed to Alpage Records – remix with a more stripped back and deeper approach. The vocals remain in place but the atmosphere is a little more cosmic here. Then comes Her Majesty’s Ship artist and label owner David Shaw & The Beat with a celestial, emotive version that is embellished with slap funk guitars, walking basslines and a breezy sense of groove.

Next up Juan Soto, a Mexican producer for Sicario Records, layers his remix with oodles of reverb and dub weightiness and allows the scale-riding synths do be his main attraction. Lastly, Lille duo Meki & Kolen completely flip the script and reimagine the track as a dub techno roller with grainy chords, silvery percussion and shuffling drums that cannot fail to sweep you up.

We are Enfant Terrible are surely one of the most exciting and unique disco acts out there, and this EP proves that in spades.
