Wenzday Lets Loose the Lead Single From Her Forthcoming Follow-Up EP With “Like That”
L.A-based producer Wenzday is shaking things up with the first salvo from her forthcoming sophomore EP on Insomniac’s IN / ROTATION imprint, teaming up with esteemed singer-songwriter Tyler Graves on the lead single “Like That.”
Notorious for unraveling the tricky and intrinsic nuances involved with love and loss, Wenzday has established a cult-like following that she lovingly refers to as her fellow “Heartbreakers.” She laid claim to the name by way of her breakout single “Heartbreak House” alongside the trap-fueled flows of Kevin Flum, which was released on IN/ ROTATION back in 2019. Before the crowd had time to process the grief and ensuing relief embedded in her single, she followed up the effort a few short weeks later with the official four-track EP of the same name, which demonstrated her uncanny ability to translate heartache into bassline-driven bangers. Now four years down the road, Wenzday is ready to put her name back on the calendar to unveil her follow-up EP with the label.
Exchanging raucous bottom-end for a more restrained backbone, “Like That” aligns itself closer with the tech-infused tracks Wenzday has been churning out since her label debut. Tyler Graves lays down a naughty-natured vocal hook that encourages the floor to embrace their inner freak. The frisky refrain is met with a tectonic groove bolstering elastic basslines, gurgling acid fills, murky undertones, and warehouse-ready horn stabs.
Shedding light on the optimized collaborative process working with Graves, Wenzday says, “Tyler and I first got connected when I remixed her song with Bijou, “Crown,” a couple years ago and, since then, I knew I wanted to feature her on a track of my own. After sending her the instrumental, it was an instant click. So, we hopped in the studio, and she wrote/tracked the record all in less than 8 hours. I’m so excited that it’s the first single off the EP because I think this song really embodies the new sound I have been leaning into while maintaining the themes of empowerment and girl power that I have been cultivating over the years.”
Wenzday is the brainchild of Asian American producer Taylor Chung, who was born in Las Vegas, raised in the Bay Area, and later relocated to Los Angeles to fully pursue a career in music. But Chung has been making just as many moves as in the literal sense. She’s the cofounder of the bass music label and clothing line 40oz Cult, alongside her real-life brother Dack Janiels. She’s also the host of the weekly radio show ‘Everyday Is Wenzday,’ airing on the Insomniac Radio station every Wednesday, naturally. On top of it all, she’s been hammering out weighty house cuts such as “Handle With Care,” “Move,” “Nowhere,” and her most recent offering “B.T.H.D (Bring the House Down).”
Tyler Graves is an L.A-based songstress who has been making waves in the dance space over the last few years. In addition to the aforementioned feature on “Crown” for BIJOU, she’s become a festival-favorite from soul-stirring songs such as “Only Now” with Seven Lions, and her “Undertow” collab with Danny Olson and Bebi on Lost In Dreams.
“Like That” is the soundtrack for the late-night freaks, and serves as the perfect primer for Wenzday’s imminent ‘Heartbreakers Club’ EP that’s peeking itself right around the corner.
