Where Were You?
Honouring the history of the capitals grime and garage movements, this November 29th sees Lisa Maffia, Preditah, Logan Sama, Sir Spyro, Big Narstie, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont, Groove Chronicles and Mike ‘Ruff Cut’ Lloyd head to London’s iCan Studios for Where Were You? The latest addition to streetwear brand Boxfresh’s 25th Birthday series.
A party dedicated to the seminal artists and sounds that have sound tracked the past 25 years, Where Were You? is a retrospective look through the music movements which began in London’s underground scene but are now a fundamental part of the UK’s music heritage. Heading back to where it all began, in the heart of London, Boxfresh invites you to celebrate their 25th anniversary.
Heading up proceedings is So Solid Crew’s first lady, Lisa Maffia with a live performance. A leading figure in the So Solid contingent, Lisa and the crew rose from the underground scene to dominate the charts as urban music hit the mainstream in the early noughties. Preditah also joins the Where Were You? lineup, an artist recognised as for his distinctive grime and garage productions and electric DJ sets. Producing some of the most influential classic grime instrumentals, Preditah entered the limelight back in 2011 and has been an unstoppable force ever since.
Where Were You? unites three of the most important names in the grime climate unite forces next, as Logan Sama and Sir Spyro go back-to-back for a ‘History of Grime’ set, with the largest MC in the game Big Narstie on mic duties for what will be an unforgettable set for Boxfresh’s anniversary. Having hosted radio shows across 1xtra, Rinse FM and Kiss FM, both Logan Sama and Sir Spyro are recognised as grime pioneers, and NAA founder Big Narstie steps in to bring the hype as one of the most charismatic MC’s in the game.
Not stopping there, features garage hero Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont; an artist who has played a crucial part in shaping the garage circuit since its beginnings. One half of the legendary ‘Tuff Jam,’ production outfit, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont was responsible for bringing the UKG sound to the masses with his Kiss 100 radio show. Early garage figureheads, Groove Chronicles and Mike “Ruff Cut” Lloyd also come together for a very special ‘History of UK Garage’ back-to-back set; two selectors who are undoubtedly integral urban figures of their own making, both have played intrinsic roles in garage music’s rich history.
2014 has seen Boxfresh present workshops, lectures, radio takeovers, club shows and more, bringing together the biggest and best in urban talent from the spectrums of art, music and fashion. The series so far has included the likes of Bok Bok, Eats Everything, Skream, Goldie, Fatima, Metalheadz, Shy FX, Novelist and many more.
