Much more than just a DJ Maya Jane Coles is a producer, engineer and label boss. Maya is an independent artist in complete control of her own music, from writing, producing and arranging to even creating her own artwork – something of a rarity in today’s culture of co-producers, ghostwriters and engineers.
After her explosion onto the house scene back in 2010, Maya Jane Coles has blossomed into one of the industry’s most respected figures: picking up numerous awards including ‘Best producer’ and ‘Best DJ’ from the likes of Mixmag, DJ Mag and FACT!; making RA’s top 10 DJ Chart multiple times; amassing millions of plays online with a colossal 3.2 million Soundcloud followers, gracing over 20 magazine covers, and even taking the time to front Dr Martens AW16 campaign worldwide.
Maya’s credits also cover Drake & Nicki Minaj’s Grammy nominated ‘Truffle Butter’ – a song on the verge of Platinum in the US and that has already gone Silver in the UK, while her wider ventures into collaborations with disparate artists, like acoustic songwriter Chelou, has positioned Maya as totally unique – someone for whom genre never poses an obstacle.
As a DJ, Maya has played from Coachella to Glastonbury, headlined with her own event brands, and played in the Tate Modern, MOMA and even Brighton FC Stadium. An artist who’s seen it all in 40 + countries, Maya Jane Coles demonstrates unrivalled command of the best in electronic music, alongside a formidable work ethic.
Building from early releases on Dogmatik, Mobile and Hypercolour and remixing the likes of The XX, Bonobo, Little Dragon, Sia and Ella Fitzgerald along the way; Maya founded her own record labelI/AM/ME, which has gone on to host Breach, Dense & Pika, and Wax Wings, as well as providing a liberated platform for Maya’s own music.
After her debut album, ‘Comfort’, appeared on I/AM/ME; an eponymous bass music driven album under her “Nocturnal Sunshine” alias soon followed, both to much critical acclaim. Now, on the cusp of her eagerly awaited return to the LP, ‘Take Flight’, Maya offers ‘Won’t Let You Down’ EP; an exciting taster of just how strong her next full-length is set to be.
Title track ‘Won’t Let You Down’ gets the EP underway, introducing psychic synth stabs surrounded by her ever endearing lucid atmospherics and impelling drums. ‘Cherry Bomb’ plays with vocal textures alongside immersive synths and heady drum programming, before ‘Round In Circles’ incorporates dub-inspired syncopated beats and intoxicating vocal atmospherics for a hypnotic track – sure to have a seismic impact on dance floors.
Pets Recording bosses Catz n Dogz provide a high-octane remix for ‘Won’t Let You Down’ whilst rising star Paride Saraceni, offers a darker prime-time techno alternative.
Proof that she is never one to rest on her laurels, ‘Won’t Let You Down’ occupies space where most producers cannot dare to dream of reaching – warming her ever growing fan base up for what is certain to be a momentous second album.
‘Won’t Let You Down’ is an exciting progression for Maya Jane Coles, acting as an appetizer for ‘Take Flight’ and the impact it will undoubtedly cause, not just in the electronic music world but beyond too.
