Zinc’s latest release for Rinse is a pair of ruffneck house tracks, each lean, muscular and primed for club play. As its title suggests, ‘Rollin’ Neatly’ establishes a groove – centred around a piledriving sub-bass figure that bounds wildly up and down the register – and allows it to play out to hypnotic effect, winding melody and percussion around each other in an intricate dance. ‘King Kong’ is ruder and more raucous still, whipping UK funky-styled percussive syncopations, plasticky bleeps and junglist sub-bass pulses into a stormy and humid peak-time track. Both tracks find Zinc at his skillful best, sharpening his house aesthetic into something versatile yet very much his own.
Zinc has established his sound as a force to be reckoned with. Rather than simply offering his own take on an existing UK house sound, it takes more of a synthetic approach, drawing heavy influence from his long running history in drum & bass and UK dance music. So his vision of house is rough, energetic and uniquely London in nature, propelled by abrasive blasts of sub-bass and percussion that draws equally from house, garage, funky and drum & bass.
