Colm Warren ‘Without You’ – out now!
The release of “Without You” sees Colm Warren continuing a striking evolution from his early days in Belfast’s punk scene to a more expansive and emotionally nuanced sound. Once known as the frontman of The Twenty, Warren has steadily reshaped his artistic identity, culminating in a body of work that now leans toward orchestral arrangement and introspective songwriting.
After nearly ten years away from music, Warren’s re-emergence in 2020 marked a decisive turning point. His early solo releases “Void,” “Shame,” and “Choked” introduced a darker, more contemplative voice, one preoccupied with themes of disconnection and internal struggle. These tracks established a foundation that would continue to evolve in subsequent years.
By the time he released “Truth” alongside Maeve Smyth in 2023, Warren had begun to broaden both his sonic palette and emotional scope. The song’s success led to a notable collaboration with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall, where his performance—including a tribute to Shane MacGowan through A Rainy Night in Soho—was widely praised.
Warren’s momentum continued through 2024 with the release of “Alright,” “Dead Days,” and “Thinking of You.” Each track was paired with visually ambitious content, collectively drawing significant online engagement. Industry response remained strong, with Clash highlighting the vulnerability at the core of his songwriting.
Now, with “Without You,” Warren enters a new phase that blends his established emotional depth with a more outward-looking perspective. Released on World Down Syndrome Day, the track reflects on familial love and the influence of his nephew Ódhrán. Its orchestral arrangement, crafted by John Byrne and performed by the Bulgarian Symphonic Orchestra, signals a continued commitment to musical expansion.
The accompanying video, developed in partnership with Down Syndrome Cork and directed by Tetsuhiko Endo, underscores the project’s emphasis on inclusion and representation. As Warren looks ahead to a series of releases throughout 2026, “Without You” encapsulates an artist fully engaged in redefining both his sound and his purpose.
