Julia Sommerfield Makes a Haunting First Impression with ‘Ratata’

With the release of her debut single “Ratata,” Julia Sommerfield enters the indie and alternative pop scene with a sound that feels immersive, emotional, and unmistakably cinematic. The Los Angeles-based artist combines haunting production with deeply introspective songwriting, creating a debut that resonates long after its final moments.

Sommerfield, originally from Seattle, has long been drawn to storytelling in all forms. She began writing songs as a child before eventually branching into novels and screenplays. Now studying Writing for Screen and Television at USC while pursuing a songwriting minor through the Thornton School of Music, she continues to refine a creative voice shaped equally by narrative and music.

“Ratata” emerged from a deeply personal chapter in Sommerfield’s life during her recovery from a serious illness. Rather than presenting the experience literally, she reframes it through metaphor, portraying illness as a mysterious and dangerous figure capable of both seduction and destruction. The song explores the emotional push-and-pull between despair and survival with striking honesty.

Produced alongside Brian Squillace, the track’s sonic identity leans into surrealism, layering hypnotic vocal textures over eerie, nightmare-inspired production. Influences from artists like Billie Eilish, Laufey, and Bob Dylan subtly echo throughout the song, though Sommerfield’s cinematic instincts ultimately give the track its own distinctive personality.

As she prepares for upcoming performances in London with her band Andromeda, Sommerfield’s debut signals the arrival of an artist with a strong creative vision already taking shape. “Ratata” stands as an emotionally charged introduction — one that showcases both her vulnerability and her potential as a rising force in alternative pop music.
