LENny (IT) talks about his latest Capitol Hill-inspired single Down
Lenny Lorenzi aka LENny (IT), is a Romagna native born in 1990, developed a profound passion for electronic music from a young age. As a teenager, he embarked on his journey, delivering captivating DJ sets and producing his own music. By the age of seventeen, Lenny found himself behind the decks at Titilla, the exclusive venue located in Cocoricò, Riccione. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary adventure that swiftly propelled him to perform at prestigious venues such as Sankeys in Ibiza, Macarena in Barcelona, Output in New York, and Clevelander in Miami. Naturally, he also graced the stages of renowned clubs along the iconic Romagna Riviera.
His latest release is Down, a chunky, mainroom tech house cut with a warped vocal. Ahead of its release, we caught up with the artist for a chat.
Hi Lenny! Thanks for talking to us, how are you doing?
All great just moved back to my old hometown NYC. Pretty busy with my new productions and really excited for 2024!
There have been quite a few amazing electronic music artists to emerge from Italy like yourself, what was it like growing up there and who were some of your local heroes?
In Italy the electronic scene is always pretty nice, we grow with that genre specially from where I come from, Riccione. We have there the most famous club in Italy “Cocorico” I used to be resident DJ when I was a kid. About heroes I can say that we have a lot of many good DJs, but I don’t recognize myself in any of them, I am more aligned with international DJs, then many of my colleagues.
Take us through a day in your life, from a possible morning routine through to your production work and otherwise, please.
Usually I structure my day with an early alarm, around 7.30AM, breakfast with a nice cold coffee and start to find the correct inspiration. When is sunny I love to take my laptop and bring my daily music work around the city. I don’t like stay at home when there is good weather, make music in open spaces or a coffee shop is common. I never start to make music before listen around 70/80 tracks, I need to find something that catches my idea of the day, can be a vocal or some type of old music melodic instrument… everything can turn me over and start to make music. I divide every production in 3 parts: main Loop track idea, arrange the track and then mixing it and finalize it.
And I love spent the night after dinner watching sport or movies… and I also give 1 day at week to clubbing and hear new artist too…
You’re soon to release your new single Down. What was the inspiration behind the track and what were you trying to bring the listener to experience?
So… that track for me is a really particular motivational, everything start from my tv. I was watching the news and Capitol Hill Riot was the main news and I saw those guys broke doors and jump inside the building trying to create anarchy mood, and I am a strong democratic person, I hate these kind of actions so the power of that riot came into my studio and helped me create the bassline of Down, and adding the vocals of the guy that speak in that episode. Hopefully this will give to the listeners the same sensation that I felt in that moment.
How do you select the artists and DJs for your Wave Music Boat parties, and what do you look for in their music style?
For my boat party I usually make research about every not DJ that play in my city or around, I need find a talent and someone that never play in any clubs around for make my event unique. And we need control also the budget so we usually find new talent with some amazing production tracks.
What’s a book you’ve read or film you watched that has left an impact on you, and why?
I love mob and mafia movies. Specially the US ones;Padrino, Once upon a time in America, Scarface and more. I felt that maybe if I was born in early 1900’s I was not a DJs but a for sure once of those big dudes that work beside the law! LOL
Apart from music, what makes you happiest?
I am a super sport guy. I played basketball since when I was a kid and still playing… I had hard injuries in the past so I been in professional league just for couple of years but I still playing and know how to shoot.
Having started DJing at a young age, what advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers who are just starting out?
I became and artist and dj watching Erik Morillo, Dennis Ferrer, Vega, and all that side of the house music. My parents were listing all the House Dj Stars and I became part of it, stereo was playing always some good deep house in my house!
What can we expect from you in 2024?
Hopefully to get back part of the success that my production need. The market now is hard, is more about social media and photo then music and playing. I start mix with turnable and vinyls, now everyone play music with usb and use sync button. I mean I think we need to give more space to the music and less to how we use social media. Hopefully something gonna change.
Finally, for you what has been the biggest track of 2023?
For me… is Rapture Part III nothing more special then that! Keinemusic are the game changer for our category! Great production!
