London’s SPLICE FESTIVAL returns: 26th – 28th May 2017
Splice Festival is back for its second edition, taking place over the bank holiday weekend 26th – 28th May 2017 at East London’s multi-arts centresRich Mix, Red Gallery and Kamio. Part of the EU funded AV Node network,Splice brings together over 40 international artists to celebrate the diverse field of audiovisual performance, including live cinema, AV remixing, VJing, video art and projection mapping. This year sees another diverse programme with headline act Coldcut, Award-winning Mira Calix and DJ Food among the performers alongside a host of educational talks, networking and satellite events.

PERFORMANCES: Ninja Tune founders and ground-breaking AV pioneersColdcut return in their 30th anniversary year to headline Splice with their brand new AV show. Multi award-winning composer Mira Calix (Warp Records) presents a special DJ/VJ set inspired by Josef Albers experiments with colour. Turntablist DJ Food performs his ‘Selected Aphex Works’ AV set, plus a rare live performance from the American godfathers of AV remixing – Emergency Broadcast Network (EBN) in their first appearance in over a decade. Multimedia duo Filastine & Nova present their provocative new future bass show ‘Drapetomania’, designed to undermine borders and strike against xenophobia. French visionaries 1024 Architecture perform ‘Recession’ – a journey through what’s left of our civilisation. Zan Lyons fuses live viola looping with distorted beats and real-time remixing of his own films. Urban Projectionsunveil the World Premiere of their new show ‘Stratum’ mixing environmental recordings, electronic beats and geometric abstraction. Budapest based band Mïus x Attaray Visual close the festival with their poetic journey into a timeless microcosmos of darkness and light.
Experimental music based performances with Q&A’s come from Spatial-Golding, Christian Faubel & Ralf Schreiber and Martina Zena. European partner event, Athens Digital Arts Festival present a screening programme entitled #PostFuture.
Other artists include Mixmaster Morris, Scald Process, Dotokime, Eclectic Method, Adrena Adrena, Alba Corral, Tim Cowie, Joe Beedles, Ben Sheppee, No Signal, Bitvert, Aeldryn, Matteo Zamagni and Ilia Rogatchevski.
SATELLITE EVENTS: Saturday night event, Extended Play is headlined by Rinse FM resident J:Kenzo alongside underground electronic producersHector Plimmer and ScanOne with politically charged visuals from Sagberg. Independent video art event, Panorama also host a night of screenings, live music and exhibitions at Genesis Cinema as a warm-up to the festival on Tuesday 23rd May.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME: Panels and talks with award-winning directorAdam Smith, best known for his visionary video work on The Chemical Brothers live shows; Memo Akten, founding member of Marshmallow Laser Feast and winner of the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica; and multimedia artistVicki Bennett of People Like Us who was given an artist residency at BBC Creative Archive. Founders of leading AV software Resolume, Edwin de Koning and Bart van der Ploeg host workshops and give an exclusive preview of Resolume 6. François Wunschel hosts a talk and masterclass based on MadMapper, the leading projection mapping software that he co-created. Colombian artist Optika hosts a workshop on LED Mapping & Stage Design, Manchester’s Test Card host a Networking Forum to debate the future of AV arts in the UK.
INSTALLATIONS: Emmy award-winning CG artist Andy Lomas presents his stereoscopic installation ‘Constrained Forms’ and EBN unveil their new touch-screen project ‘Full Release’ which contains never before seen archive footage.
