The next release on Rinse is by London trio Sunless 97, a two-track single that also features a collaboration with Palmistry. It’s an immersive, moving listen, with its two songs driven by pop oriented melodies made for moments of club euphoria, melded with the deadly crystalline sheen of grime’s instrumental fringe. For Sunless ’97 it marks the follow up to a string of acclaimed releases for Abeano and Not Even, while Palmistry’s series of singles for Mixpak have found him honing a spooked, sparse sound that’s equally emotional and experimental.
Sunless 97’s ‘Pure4Sure’ intensifies the energy, channeling the low-key mood into a swift arrangement of springloaded beats and flickering melodies, through which their vocals drift and swirl.
‘aia’ seamlessly draws Sunless 97 and Palmistry’s two approaches together, its staggered drums and raindrop chimes forming the backdrop for an intimate, hushed piece of call-and-response synthetic pop.
