Closing out the latter part of the year with a series of high-end collabs on VIVa LiMITED and Glasgow Underground, Italian house-maestro Pirupa ends 2018 on a high with a solo release on Armada Subjekt. Fusing genres in a way that only Pirupa can right now, the ‘XXL EP’ delivers extravagant grooviness of the highest order in a two-tracker that isn’t afraid to push boundaries.
Leading the way with title track ‘XXL’, Pirupa treats us to a low-slung roller that focuses on a growling bassline layered with effects, tribal percussion and a ragga sample that’ll take you right back to the ‘90s. A straight-talking house weapon that draws on some well-known old-school warehouse vibes for inspiration, this one is as forward-thinking as it is a nod to the ‘good old days’.
One thing’s for certain – you can never accuse Pirupa of being is a one-trick pony, so if you’re looking for more of the same with ‘Banging Hips’ then you’ll be disappointed; turn this one up as it only has one destination in mind: the dance floor. Horns, a bassline that comes straight from the discotheque, keys to match and a marching energy that never lets up – all wrapped up in a 4/4 house groove. You’ll spot this one a mile off this winter and with names like Mark Knight, MK, Nicole Moudaber, Mihalis Safras, Sacha Robotti, Claptone and Vanilla Ace supporting, this one is guaranteed to hit the spot.
