Michael Klein - BLK DRP #1 EP
Coming from Frankfurt, the DJ and producer Michael Klein was always surrounded by techno clubs like Cocoon which shaped his musical direction. His own production is more varied and includes hypnotic, bassy and stretched beats as well as straight-forward techno. Klein’s music got recognition from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Chris Liebing, Speedy J and Pan-Pot, alongside whom he performs and who recently released some of Klein’s records on their Second State record label.
His latest EP BLK DRP#1 will be nevertheless released on Michael Klein’s own new imprint called BLK DRP which focuses on underground creation and remixes by those who inspire him.
Signal Response stands out for its organic sound design and an engaging atmosphere of a humid jungle, where you would practice an introspective dance to the percussive, echoed rhythm. And soon, the humming voices of the forest spirits would join you. Amelie Lens‘ remix is everything but monotonic. There are constant unpredictable claps and splashes, and the whole track cruises around a creaky synth, dropping like acid rain, and Amelie’s vocal sample, announcing the lack of signal response. Yes, you heard her, you're alone in this.
In Focus proves that Michael Klein is well off with a minimalistic sound palette – more important is, which sounds he uses and how he modulates them. Throughout the track, he’s playing with the release phase of the kick, holding back or letting go the vocal sample like a growling dog on a leash, slowly building up a percussive madness in which the track ends.
The remix of Raiz puts the track on the more traditional techno grid ad unleashes the beast to finish you
