atish - Peculiar Colors EP
Manjumasi Records look to the label’s co-founder, atish, for its next EP, a four track affair with two originals and remixes from Lee Jones and Dance Spirit.
This release is actually something of a milestone as it is atish’s first ever solo EP. It comes after a year spent working hard in the studio and drawing on his experiences of playing for dancefloors around the globe. As such, this key figure of the San Francisco scene crafts sounds of his own that are truly deep and melodic.
Up first is the brilliant ‘Twiddles,’ a textural and hypnotic number with delicate and spacey melodies floating over a bed of modulated synth pads. It’s heavyweight and purposeful and really sucks you in. Then comes the second great original, ’Peculiar Colors,’ which is built around an upfront hook, melding an orchestral palette of mallet percussion with a solid bass-driven groove. Again a heavyweight affair with real purpose as well as depth and emotion, it proves atish has a wealth of ideas and studio skills.
Berlin-based Watergate and Aus associate Lee Jones delivers the first remix, really emphasising the colours in the process. Following in the style of his outstanding recent EP on Bar25 Music, Lee’s interpretation is richly emotive with gently but insistently forward moving melodies. The results are both beautiful and contemplative, with a sturdy kick that keeps the dancefloor energy firmly in place.
Meanwhile, LA-based production duo Dance Spirit have committed themselves to a proper exploration of the peculiar, delivering a remix that takes things in an otherworldly direction. Their remix is a sonic dissection, with melodies stretched and recombined into an extremely trippy affair and percussive riffs echoing through hyperspace. This is one for the late-night dancefloors or the early morning hours.
This is a fantastic first solo release from apish and continues to keep his Manjumasi Records label right on track.
